L’Osteopatia è un approccio basato sul contatto manuale e di assistenza alla salute della persona, mirato a ricercare quelle alterazioni funzionali del corpo che sfociano poi in stati dolorosi. L’osteopata dunque si occupa principalmente di problemi muscolo-scheletrici, specie quando sono associati ad alterazioni funzionali degli organi o del sistema cranio-sacrale.
Se l’Osteopatia è una disciplina conosciuta ormai dai più, non è altrettanto scontata la conoscenza della sua applicazione in ambito odontoiatrico. Sempre più spesso, infatti, si parla di osteopatia in campo dentistico come approccio multi-disciplinare che vede proprio le due figure di riferimento, ovvero l’osteopata e l’odontoiatra, lavorare in sinergia tra loro per la diagnosi del problema e la sua risoluzione.
Così come si occupa delle disfunzioni dell’apparato muscolo-scheletrico, allo stesso modo l’osteopata in campo odontoiatrico svolge il ruolo fondamentale di assicurarsi che la bocca e gli organi ad essa connessi come guance, lingua, mandibola e mascella siano in perfetta salute. Questo consente infatti di ottenere un approccio odontoiatrico decisamente migliore.
In particolar modo l’osteopata si occupa di far sì che il paziente possa svolgere nel modo corretto tutte le sue funzioni primarie come la masticazione, la deglutizione, la respirazione e la fonazione.
Osteopatia e odontoiatria: quali sono i campi d’azione.
Osteopatia e odontoiatria, dunque, sono due discipline mediche che hanno molti punti in comune nell’approccio al benessere del paziente e spesso si trovano ad operare sinergicamente in diversi ambiti. Dal momento che l’osteopata ha pertinenza in particolare nell’ambito cervico-mandibolare e nelle strutture annesse, il suo compito in ambito odontoiatrico è di garantire che tutto funzioni nel migliore dei modi, in primis la zona delle ossa del cranio, il rachide cervicale e tutte le strutture miofasciali.
Ecco dunque che, in ambito odontoiatrico, l’intervento dell’osteopata può concentrarsi principalmente in tutti quei casi che coinvolgono proprio queste strutture, in modo diretto o indiretto: bruxismo e problemi mandibolari come disturbi dell’articolazione preposta al movimento mandibolare e mascellare; mal di denti e malocclusione, ma anche nevralgie varie come quella a carico del trigemino e persino alcuni tipi di cefalea, diventano competenza proprio dell’osteopatia in ambito odontoiatrico.
Tutti i disturbi odontoiatrici che interessano dunque muscoli e ossa inerenti l’apparato masticatorio e fonatorio, diventano il focus principale degli interventi osteopatici in ambito dentistico.
L’obiettivo finale è dunque far sì che, attraverso un corretto approccio manipolativo di tipo osteopatico, si vadano a rimuovere tutte quelle interferenze che possono contrastare i trattamenti odontoiatrici, rendendoli più difficili da applicare. Rimuovendo tali interferenze scheletrico-muscolari, il dentista avrà più facilità nell’operare, ad esempio, in ambito protesico e ortodontico in generale.
Non solo: molti atteggiamenti errati, quali quelli riguardanti i muscoli facciali o posturali, vanno corretti dall’osteopata affinché il trattamento odontoiatrico vada a buon fine e non resti viziato da interferenze cronicizzate.
Osteopatia in ambito dentistico: in che modo intervenire.
Definiti quelli che sono i target di azione dell’osteopatia in ambito odontoiatrico, occorre vedere come lo specialista interviene sulle varie problematiche.
Come in tutti i campi medici, anche qui il tempismo è fondamentale: se si intercettano i problemi fin dall’inizio – come nel caso delle malocclusioni dentali ad esempio- si può scongiurare la necessità, con il passare del tempo, di dover ricorrere a interventi più invasivi come il ricorso ad apparecchi ortodontici.
L’osteopata, inoltre, interviene molto spesso in ambito cervicale perché questo tratto della colonna vertebrale interagisce direttamente con i meccanismi di funzionamento della bocca: in ogni caso gli interventi osteopatici, qualunque sia il settore di intervento, andrebbero sempre effettuati prima e dopo l’intervento dell’odontoiatra per massimizzare i risultati e mantenerli nel tempo, ottenendo così un effetto più duraturo. Tra l’altro si tratta sempre di interventi manuali e mai invasivi.
Ci sono dunque tre modi in cui l’osteopata interviene in ambito odontoiatrico: rimuovendo le interferenze funzionali, per permettere un miglior lavoro protesico, ortodontico e di riabilitazione; rimuovendo le cause funzionali a monte del problema e, infine, monitorando nel tempo i risultati ottenuti, soprattutto nel caso di terapia piuttosto lunghe.
